Effects of Leasing Federal Lands
Economic experts have leveled distinct criticisms at the Bureau of Land Management's handling of the leasing of federal lands. The federal administration has to consider the overall state of the nation, including the environment, and that concern is reflected in the BLM's allocation of federal lands for leasing. Some experts in the field complain that while 15 percent of developed oil reserves, 15 percent of learned oil resources, and perhaps 33 percent of undiscovered oil resources are on federal lands, no more than 4 percent of the federal offshore holdings have ever been developed for oil and gas.
